Hanoi (VNA) – The Cambodian National Assembly (NA) passed amendments to four laws on elections, which are related to the distribution of seats at the parliament and councils at all levels if the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) is dissolved.

With the approval of 67 of 123 lawmakers, the NA passed the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP)-supported amendments to the four laws on elections of the National Assembly and Senate as well as provincial, municipal, district and commune councils.

Under the new laws, if a political party abandons its seats, is delisted, is disbanded or dissolved, the number of seats of that party will be distributed to other parties running for the organisations. Fifty-five CNRP lawmakers boycotted the session.

After receiving CPP lawmakers’ proposals on making changes on four laws, the NA Standing Committee on October 12 asked the NA’s Legislation and Justice Commission to review the issue.

Cambodia’s Ministry of the Interior on October 6 filed a complaint to the Supreme Court, requesting the dissolution of the opposition CNRP. Earlier, the Cambodian Youth Party and the Funcinpec Party filed complaints to the Ministry of the Interior, asking for the dissolution of the CNRP after its leader Kem Sokha was charged with treason.-VNA
