Car sales in ASEAN decline by 10.8 percent in nine months

Car sales in the ASEAN region in the first nine months of 2014 fell by 10.8 percent from a year earlier to 2,380,683 units, said the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF).

Sales in Indonesia stood at 932,943 units during the period, rising by 2.7 percent against the same period last year and accounting for 39.2 percent of the total, the AAF data showed.

The figure indicated that Indonesia overtook last year’s top spot Thailand, which experienced a drop of 37.3 percent from a year before, seeing 648,410 units sold, which represented 27.3 percent of the regional sales.

Malaysia came in the third place with 492,305 units sold in the three quarters, followed by the Philippines with 169,727 units, Vietnam with 90,043 units, Singapore with 33,533 units, and Brunei with 13,722 units, the AAF said.

Singapore showed the fastest regional growth rate at 34.2 percent year on year. Vietnam and the Philippines gained the respective rates of 30.5 percent and 29.2 percent.

Car sales in Thailand and Brunei shrank by 37.3 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively.

The AAF comprises Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
