Seoul (VNA) – President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Moon Jae-in has announced his “New Southern Policy,” aiming to better connect the country to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and expand the economic influence of Asia’s fourth-largest economy in the 600-billion-population region.

The RoK’s diplomacy in Asia has been more toward Japan, China and Russia, he said at a business forum in Jakarta, Indonesia on November 9, adding that the policy should be expanded and Indonesia is a promising country.

Explaining the new policy, an advisor of the President said that its main objective is to build a win-win partnership with 10 ASEAN member countries for people’s interest, common prosperity and peace. In the Southeast Asia, the policy focuses on development and economic issues.

The new policy was designed in the context that the RoK is seeking to reduce independence on traditional partners such as China and the US. President Moon first mentioned the policy during the Eastern Economic Forum in Russia in September, targeting stronger cooperation with China, Japan, Russia and Mongolia.-VNA
